Maintaining Your On-site Fuel Tank

operations290

When it comes to managing your own fuel tank, preventative maintenance is key to ensuring your fuel supply stays free of contaminants - keeping both you and your equipment happy.

Water and other pollutants such as rust, bacteria, dirt, dust and algae are all hazards to your clean fuel supply and equipment. If these contaminants make their way into your tank they can end up in your engines, your pumps and ultimately cause equipment breakdown across your fleet.

If you are going through your fuel reserves rather quickly, there is usually little concern surrounding spoiled product, but is it still apt to be mindful and regularly check your tank and pumping equipment. However, if you are storing fuel for an extended period of time, it is important to ensure proper preventative maintenance steps are in place.

  • Inspect gaskets, hatches, vents and fill caps for damage and replace if necessary.

  • Ensure that all connections, filters, pipes and monitors are sealed well and are regularly checked for breaks/leaks.

  • The tank fill area should be raised and away from areas where rainwater and contaminants could flow in.

  • Replace your filters on a regular basis.

  • Ensure whenever the tank is opened that the area is clean and dry.

  • Regularly check for water at the bottom of your tank with a water finding paste.

  • Ask your fuel supplier what measures are being taken by them to ensure your fuel is delivered free of water and other contaminants.
